Mentoring

The LUK Mentoring Program pairs caring, concerned adults with youth who would benefit from additional support and assistance.  By sharing fun activities and exposing a youth to new experiences, a mentor encourages positive choices, promotes high self-esteem, supports academic achievement and introduces the youth to new ideas.

The LUK Mentoring Program accepts youth ages 6 to 17 living in Central MA and pairs them with a volunteer who is a responsible role model. Mentors develop a friendship with a young person in order to help him or her be successful at home, at school, and in the community. Sometimes youth need someone outside the family to share their thoughts with.

Potential volunteer mentors are oriented to the program, interviewed, trained and complete background checks prior to being “matched” with a young person. Youth who choose to participate in the program are also interviewed. Mentoring Staff look at a number of factors when making a match which include mentor and mentee preference, interests, geography and availability. Once matched, all parties are contacted regularly to see how things are going and offer support.

We have opportunities for Community-based mentoring as well as Site-based. There is no fee for youth to participate in this program. All mentors are volunteers and we ask for a time commitment of one year or one academic year. Matches participate in a variety of activities from academic to recreational, learn from one another, explore new interests, share current interests and build a friendship.

Other opportunities to participate in the LUK Mentoring Program include joining our Mentoring Advisory Board, sponsoring an activity, donating tickets for our matches, inviting us to speak at your workplace, or fundraising by riding or donating to the LUK Rodman Ride for Kids team.
