Gardner Community Action Team (GCAT)
The Gardner Community Action Team (GCAT) is a program of LUK that is comprised of residents, business owners, public officials, city employees, and stakeholders. These coalition members work to educate the community on underage drinking, youth tobacco use, prescription drugs, and other drugs.
The Gardner Community Action Team works closely with all of its community partners to coordinate, plan and implement activities and learning opportunities for the community as a whole. These activities and learning opportunities include but are not limited to multi-media campaigns, health fairs, and conducting compliance checks in partnership with the Gardner License Commission and the Gardner Police Department.
Underage Drinking Prevention: The coalition provides or supports educational seminars to parents; asset building programs to youth, informational tables at health fairs and community events, and alternative activities for young adults. It also supports package store and restaurant compliance checks with the police department, TIPS server trainings, creates and distributes social media and social marketing campaigns in the region.
College Age Dangerous Drinking Prevention: The coalition provides or supports educational tools and seminars for college age youth, provides social marketing materials to college age youth, and provides training and information to employers that hire college age youth.
Prescription Drug Misuse and Abuse Prevention: The coalition is wokring hard to prevent prescription drug misuse and abuse. As a team, the coalition has provided bi-annual take-back days and permanent prescription drug drop sites in the city of Gardner. We advertize the use of these boxes within the community to decrease access to abusable drugs. We educate parents on the prevalence, signs and symptoms of this kind of drug abuse and provide youth with alternative activities and support.
